Legends, tales, and true stories related to the beer cannot be counted - without the help of a guide, you can miss the most important thing - the taste of Bavaria ...
The Bavarians are quite conservative, they all try to do thoroughly-for ages. And for beer they used the same approach. It is hard to imagine, but the fundamental law of the Bavarian Brewers “Rules of brewing” was stated back in 1539 ...
Beer in Bavaria is a “political” drink. In the old days, the resolution of disputes required the intervention of the king himself! Yes, and this is no exaggeration. "Rules of brewing" prescribed strict time limits for making beer (from 29 September to 23 April). Summer brewing was. Therefore beer was prepared for the future. And so it was well kept, it was brewed stronger (the percentage of alcohol in the beer brewed for the future was much higher).
However, the summer beer was always a problem - how to make it cold? And the solution for the medieval Munich was simply revolutionary! Near the breweries they began to build huge "beer" cellars. In winter the ice was sawed and stacked in the basement; it was logical to sell beer right here to thirsty travellers. So, they started to do - near the cellars there were beautiful grounds, and placed tables and chairs, and nearby planted trees that provide dense shade.
This revolutionary idea brewers caused a storm of indignation from the owners of pubs restaurants and inns, "Brewers only have to brew and deliver it to us, but not to sell it on the streets!". Here the king Ludwig the First interfered with business - he issued a decree that brewers can sell beer to everyone, but they may not cook food.
And though the rule lost its relevance long ago, thanks to this occasion Munich is decorated with numerous cubbies in the shade of chestnut trees, called "Beer gardens" where traditionally they don't mind if you order a beer and bring your own food...
