Lake Starnberg is a favorite vacation spot of the Bavarian aristocracy and members of the Royal family. Princess Elizabeth of Austria, known as Sissi, spent part of her youth in the castle of Possenhofen.

"Possenhofen" in translation means "island of roses". Princess Elizabeth is very often visited and loved these places. Here is still preserved the rose garden, which gave its name to the island, and the residence, which locals call "the castle of Sissi".

Today the surface of the lakes is decorated with numerous yachts and sailboats.
